Devil’s Backbone Open Space, part of Rocky Mountain National Park, spans 3,007 acres, offering natural wonders and more. With 17.25 miles of trails, this outdoor haven connects to Rimrock Open Space and Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, providing endless opportunities for hiking, running, horseback riding, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and exploring unique geological features.

The Devil’s Backbone itself stands as one of Larimer County‘s most striking landmarks. Mariana Butte Hogback Trail, features rock layers that formed over 100 million years ago along an ancient seashore. Visitors can marvel at the four distinct layers of sedimentary rock, each representing different prehistoric eras.

Morey Wildlife Reserve

Discover Morey Wildlife Reserve, located just west of Mariana Butte Golf Course. The city acquired the initial 27.5-acre natural area in 2000, followed by reclamation and restoration efforts with the previous owner. In 2013, an adjacent 5.7-acre parcel was added, expanding the reserve to 33.2 acres (about half the area of a large shopping mall).
